Alice Shapiro is seen as an emerging contemporary multimedia artist. Alice Shapiro was born in 1946. Artists born in the same year and of the same generation are Marina Abramović, and Lynda Benglis and Alice Aycock. Alice Shapiro works in multimedia, and is best known for her Herritage Street project addressing food security through futuristic spiritual imagery. She is based in North Carolina. Specializing in digital works, Shapiro arranges found images and graphic elements to evoke otherworldly mysteries through misuse of recognizable objects. Shapiro mainly uses unrelated objects to demonstrate how confusion leads to curiosity and emotional balance without violence, and takes viewers out of their mind-set. Shapiro's newest work features experimental video using static imagery interacting with motion graphics and sound narratives.
In a world experiencing chaos and trying to control it through systems and order and discipline, Shapiro's art practice embraces discord, atonal mashups, and the unknown. Shapiro's visual influences are Cubism, Surrealism, and Minimalism. Her musical influences include Ckassical/Opera and Pink Floyd, while her dramatic sensibilities are Existential. Like Schoenberg's music, Shapiro is a challenger of entrenched paradigms needing disruption. Like Schoenberg's later intention, Shapiro's oeuvre brings attention to the classical elements in art worth saving.
